A cat in the rain - Ernest Hemingway

With respect to "Cat in the rain" discuss Hemingway's philosophy of life and style of writing.
Ernest Hemingway, who is now believed to be one of the best writers ever, was born in 1899 in America. As the research shows, his life was always filled with adventures connected with his job - he worked as a reporter. He also survived both world wars and worked as a corespondent then. The writer who was a legend during his own lifetime, stands as a monument to the power of literature and could easily be considered as the most influential American writer of this century. He was an icon, partly myth and partly mythmaker, a genius and hero to many, whereas to others he was a writer obsessed with masculinity, violence and death.
When we commemorate him, what we will remember, the legends or the man? For many, the two are one in the same. We might read his work and ask who he was? Often the plots of his stories and novels fill in the sketchy details about his life. We might know he came from the Midwest, that he somehow took part in both world wars, and spent a great deal of time in Europe. Also that he loved to write, box, hunt, fish, drink, and travel until he committed suicide.
So many young people admire Hemingway, and identify with him. Maybe it is because his appeal is so great. Many readers envy him as he represents so much of what a young person wants to have: independence, experience, confidence, strength, courage and talent. And also because his style of writing differs from the one used by most writers. For example his novels use very simple words encouraging young readers to take a look at the story. Secondly, most people find his almost photographic descriptions of places very absorbing. Another important aspect are weather descriptions, which usually constitute substantial part in his writing and introduce the readers into the atmosphere of a story. The symbolic of Hemingway's characters', though they are mostly men, is another example of his fascinating techniques . "A cat in the rain" is thought to be an exception from that rule, because here the main role plays a woman. On the other hand this short story of a girl, who feels dreary in the relation between her and her husband, is an ideal recapitulation of Hemingway's philosophy. He believed that people are isolated, lonely and not able to establish happy relationships. Unfortunately, though he was one of the greatest men ever, his depressive thoughts led him to a suicide in 1969.

A narrative story
‘Snarl in the mist’

It seemed that the day would be as boring as usually, but nothing indicated the horror I would go
through. I was sitting in a comfortable armchair eating doughnuts and switching the channels when I found the Local News Channel: ‘A boy was torn to pieces by one dog, presumably by a big, aggressive husky. The animal made several lethal wounds to the boy and injured three other people who are now fighting for life in the hospital.’ The news shocked me: ‘Damn, another one. They should have caught that bastard.’ I thought.
I got up, put on my shoes and my coat as I had just remembered myself that I had to post
a letter. I went down the stairs and through a long hall I made my way out. The air was extremely heavy, with dense fog everywhere, nearly as dull as in London at this time of the year. The clouds were a thick mixture of grey and black, which did not even let a single ray of light break through.
I walked quite fast among colourful leaves bearing in mind that the post office would be closed
in ten minutes’ time when I saw in the mist something that made my blood run cold. At the beginning, it was only a dark shadow, but when it approached, I could clearly see the angry eyes, open mouth, sharp teeth and the raised tail. The enormous husky stopped about five yards in front of me scowling at me with its piercing, black eyes. I shivered with horror when I realised that the dog had bloodstains all around its head and on the chest! I moved a few steps back after I had understood that it had to be the one that I had heard about in the news.
Suddenly, I realised that there was nobody in the park except for the animal and me. Never
before have I been in such a fearful and stressful situation! I noticed that I could hear no other sound that the beating of my heart: even the wind was not blowing. All of a sudden, the dog made a growl making my hair stand on end. Certainly, I must have been very pale then as I could feel that the husky was going to attack in a second. As if it could read my thoughts, the animal moved towards me. I shielded my face with my hands waiting for the furious blow, my heart beating at the highest rate, but... nothing happened. The dog passed beside me and ran away.
I heaved a sigh of relief and slowly lowered my hands. Suddenly, I felt someone tapping my
shoulder. I turned around. In front of me, I saw a short, lank, old lady who asked: ‘Excuse me, my boy, haven’t you seen my little puppy?’

A typical Englishman's week.

A typical working Englishman gets up at 7 a.m., takes a shower, dresses up and has a quick breakfast usually consisting of toast and jam, or cornflakes with milk. He leaves home at about 8 o’clock in the morning so as not to be late to his work. He usually works from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but he has an hour’s break for lunch at 12 noon. He spends it in the nearest pub or a fast-food restaurant gossiping with colleagues and having some light meal. A typical Englishman comes back home at about half past five and has dinner with his family.
In the evening, he usually watches TV or goes for a walk with his pet. He also likes to drop into a local pub for a pint of beer. Pubs in Britain are said to be an unofficial meeting sites - a kind of clubs, where a working Englishman can relax, listen to music, play darts, bar billiards, discuss politics, weather and some local affairs with friends of him.
On saturday morning, the Englishman traditionally does the shopping for the whole week to come. He usually goes to local supermarkets or drives to shopping complexes outside town where he is able to buy products cheaper and at one place. During the day he spends a lot of time mowing the grass and growing flowers or vegetables in the garden. In the late afternoon he usually goes to the cinema, vistit friends or spends some leisure hours in a club. The club for sport or hobbies serves the Englishman’s desire to associate and to share his particular passion with others.
On Sunday, the Englishman takes his closest family to come seaside town to bathe and to have some fun. The most frequently visited places are: Brighton in the south and Blackpol in the north of England. If he likes fishing
(often calling angling), he heads towards some canal, river or lake and waits hours beside them to catch fishes.
Englishmen are famous for they love to discovering the pictureque countrysides and walking small parts of
long-distance footpaths which cross Britain. The countryside with its green fields, low hills, rivers and small forests is an ideal place for a Sunday excursion.
Refreshed after the weekends, the Englishman is ready to start another busy Monday.

Abortion

I think abortion is not good , but also is not bad . We have many issue about abortion ,some of them I want to present .For many people, the crucial issue in the abortion debates is whether the embryo or fetus or unborn child is a person. If it is, they conclude that abortion is usually on a par with murder. If not, they conclude that it is a far less serious matter, perhaps only a matter of prudence. This approach focuses on the nature and moral status of the embryo or fetus. It is not the only approach to the problems of abortion. Some writers focus on the rights and welfare of women. Others focus on world population problems or the problem of poverty. Still others on constitutional issues. All of these approaches are plausible. However, most philosophical discussion arrives at questions about personhood. We will begin with them, bearing in mind that there are other questions to consider. To follow the thread, we must consider whether the embryo or the fetus is a person and why being a person is so important morally. One approach is to think about what it is that makes anything a person and what it is about persons that gives them great value and rights of any kind .Main world religions condemn abortion . In Judaism and Christianity there is a command "Do not kill ". Abortion violates doctors. Hipocrates oath and the Geneva Convention which says: "I will show the highest respect for human life from the moment of conception".
It does not cure any disease. If a child, condemned to abortion, was wanted, a doctor would keep the pregnancy using all known methods. Current epidemics of abortion (over 1,5 million children aborted annually in the USA by surgical methods only) caused the decrease of adoption centers.
Except for a child's death, abortion threatens the health and life of a mother. If some people may legally kill for their comfort, all society is sick. The universality of abortion will lead to lack of young people whose role is to work in order to ensure the payment for those who have retired. It will create a pressure towards the use of euthanasia.
Our "respect for life" cannot be artificially restricted to the issue of abortion only, but must rather pervade our moral stances in related domains . We further seem to agree that abortion is not a positive good, not a choice we want anyone to have to make, so that we may commonly work to eliminate the conditions which encourage women to consider abortion in the first place.
Abortion-tolerant folk see abortion raising metaphysical, not empirically-decidable issues, thus forcing us into divers religious and moral frameworks. Our abortion-resistant representative believes rather that these issues are empirically decidable - and that there is consensus over when human life begins, how and to what extent it is to be protected

About living under stress

Stress has never been good. Stress appears in many common situations of our lives and there are many reasons of existence it, for example: too many problems at school, at work or at home. Also unregular style of life, bad life's conditions and many several factors. The reason of
stress can been lonelyness or ilness too. Stress at schoool and work is most popular type of tension. At work stress usually arises when headmasters can't listen their workers. Unemployed, fired out from work people often suffer from hard depressions or nervous breakdowns. People who constantly live under pressure at school or work are very shy and they usually haven't self-confidence. Irritable people very often have no endurance to overcome stress.
Therefore important is their closest family or friends. I think if you have some problems, you should always count on your family or good friends. If you are nervous and your family, friends or closest milieu do not stand for your problems you'd better meet with psychologist. Very popular nowadays is "modern stress" according to businessmen, headmasters, famous people.
Stressful situations can be very bad for organism. If you live under stress you are usually exsposed to many ilnesses, because stress can have many harmful effects on your
health. Usally body doesn't agree with stressful situation. Hard stress causes high blood pressure, heart attacks, sleeplesness, hardening arteries and other infections.
Everyone should avoid stress as often as it's possible. Otherwise you may be ill. There are some ways to beat stress. To reduce it people should always rest a lot and relax theirselves. To resolve all problems essential is to sleep on them. Other way to reduce tension is keeping stress at
bay in everyday situations. Whenever you are, you shouldn't expose yourself to unnecessary tension. For example: staying in the queue do not be angry, try to be calm.
If you stucked in traffic jam, don't forget about being patient, take your hands of the whell and breathe slowly. In common life especially important is to be organized well . People fighting with stress should organize their time efectively. Besides everybody musn't forget about taking some quiet time for theirselves. If you suffer from any ilnesses you may visit the doctor, but rememb-
er - don't use any harmfull pills if it is not necessary. If you are pupil you are almost always exposed to tension in particular situations, for example - before or during important exams. To reduce stress you should always think positively from beginning your exams and do not afraid of it. During writing don't breathe fast and try to be calm. If you fail in your exam dont' worry about it. You
can always try to pass it again. To overcome stress you could deal with watching TV, reading books or listening to music. If you have dismissed from your work you may find a new job. Sometimes important is to understand the reasons of stress. Maybe problems are situated somewhere deep in the psyche? And last, essential thing: never give up!

AIDS
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a recent extremely dangerous terminal disease. People ill with AIDS lose their psychical immunity, which in most cases leads to death. A catastrophic epidemic of AIDS is sweeping around the globe killing hundreds of thousands of men, women and children every year. With no effective treatment available anywhere in the world, and no prospect of a vaccine, people are simply powerless to stop the spread of this disease.

The situation of people ill with AIDS is really tragic. They are not only the victims of the HIV virus, but also the victims of a society which is very often not tolerant enough to accept them. They are usually isolated from the society and friends who try to avoid them or even break off their relationships with them. As far as I can see victims of AIDS in Poland aren't accept and their life in our country is very hard. What's more begging for money is the only one way to survive.

As far as I am conceded I don't afraid of AIDS victims, and people who beg in front of the shops, churches don't disturb me. Many older people are afraid of victims because they believe that they may be easily infected. However it's not true. The HIV virus perishes outside the human's system and that's why it's not possible to get infected by touch. We shouldn't afraid of AIDS victims

Inna możliwość:

AIDS is a sickness that attacks the body’s natural defence system against disease. AIDS itself does not kill,
but because the body’s defence system is damaged, the patient has a reduced ability to fight off many other diseases including flu or the common cold.
It has been reported that about 10 million people worldwide may have been infected by the virus that causes AIDS. 350 thousand people are estimated to have the disease and that another million may get it within
the next five years. Africa and South America are the continents where AIDS is most rampant, although in the
USA alone, about 50000 people have already died of AIDS.
So far there is no cure for AIDS. We know that AIDS is caused by a virus which invades healthy cells, including
the white blood cells that are part of our defence system. The virus takes control of the healthy cell’s genetic material and forces the cells to make a copy of the virus. The cell then dies and the multipled virus moves on to
invade and kill other healthy cells.
The AIDS virus can be passed on sexually or by sharing needles used to inject drugs. It also can be passed in blood products or from a pregnant woman with AIDS to her baby.
Many stories about the spread of AIDS are definitely false. One cannot get it by working with someone who’s
got it, or by going to the same school, or by touching objects belonging to an infected person. Nobody caring for an AIDS patient has developed AIDS himself/herself so far. We should learn as much as it possible about AIDS
and, since there isn’t any cure for it at present, be as helpful and understanding as possible to those

An essay about this and that.

I have a very eccentric neighbour. He is really strange. He used to be an employee at a data processing department but then they sacked him. The main reason was his hobby - phisics. He is a sciencist and makes lots of researches so sometimes he doesn't leave his house for a couple of days. Very often he was absent in the office so no wonder they fired him.
Anyway recently he came to my house. He seemed to be excited and was shouting: " I did it!" all the time. I asked him what had happened? He replied he had built a time vehicle. That was unbelievable. I was astonished by the fact that such a wise man could say such a crap. But I decided to visit his house or rather the garage. What I saw there was worse than a hairdryer on wheels.
The news about his developement had to spread quickly around our street because after a while everyone living in the neighbourhood came to the garage. They wondered how the time vehicle works? The sciencist told us that the most important part of the machine was a jet engine. When the drive makes the machine move with the speed of 100km/hour it jumps into another time dimension.
I didn't want to believe that this inferior vehicle works. Especially when he asked us to donate some money for his research. I was almost sure that he just wants to rip us off. But it wasn't truth. In fact he needed the money because he had bought a lot of gold, which has a number of industrial uses (it is very workable and conducts electricity), and which he used to make the wires. I opposed giving him money because I could see a bar of gold laying on the desk! It had had to be bought on a black market because I couldn't see the hallmark on it. The wise man explained that he needed this bar as a fuel!
We gave him what we had but under the condition of showing us the time jump. I couldn't believe my ears when he proposed me to make a time journey. But I agreed ( which was the most stupid thing I could do).
First of all I had to read a special booklet in order to take the safety precautions. Then I was tought to steer the vehicle and set out for my first time travel. Our street is quite long so I reached the speed of 100km/hour and disappeared just before the first crossroad. The only thing I can remember was an unbelievably bright flash. Then I could see an infinitive blackness around me. After that I passed out.
I woke up sitting in the vehicle in a middle of nowhere. I was on a desert. I was just about to come back to 'our times' when I saw a town in a distance. I decided to go there to find out if I am really in another time dimension. When I reached the town it showed up that I am in the Wild West. It was very dangerouse town. I guess it was the time of the gold rush then because I could see many miners hanging around the streets after a few pints of beer. It wasn't a place for me so I came back to the vehicle. But someone destroyed it while I was in the town...
Now I am sitting at the table drinking whiskey, smoking a hand-rolled blend-tobacco fag and writing this. The saloon-keeper is looking at me angrily because I owe him some money. I guess there will be a duel tomorrow morning...

An ideal teacher
My primary school history teacher repeatedly told his classes that the primary purpose of a teacher was "to teach young people to think." I was deeply impressed by this simple statement. Years later, I can still vividly remember Mrs. Pająk's commitment to engage students in her history lessons to stimulate their thinking skills. We had highly interactive discussions that forced us to ponder over more information than the textbook actually gave us. That year in Mrs. Pająk's class, I learned much more than just Polish history from her.

Now I am firmly convinced that an ideal teacher firstly ought to teach his students to think for themselves. Learning is not just about acquiring study techniques or mastering rote memorization skills, but rather about developing an understanding and appreciation for the subject material being studied and deriving practical applications. I believe that receiving an education is not just for aesthetic purposes; learning is important for the sake of understanding the world in which we live so that we will know how to relate to, cope with and succeed in it.

Secondly, through the good instructor's teaching it must be apparent that he has a love for the subject he teaches. He encourages students to develop an interest and love for this subject as well. In order to maintain his students' interest in the subject material, he creates lesson plans that are engaging, interesting and highly interactive. In my view the easiest way to perform it, is to integrate textbook learning with lessons in laboratory or museum. Such lessons should be built on their prior knowlege and the teacher must ask questions that would cause his students to think deeper about the problem.

The good teacher has not only real knowledge, which he can absorbingly pass, but he is also a kindly man, interested in youth's problems. He is responsible for his conduct and deferential to the students through his cultivated behaviour. He detects the uniqueness of each pupil, skilfully finds what is the most valuable in him, discovers good inclinations, talents and takes care of their growth.

All in all I believe that an ideal teacher helps his students reach their full potential in learning by teaching them to think. Students should be challenged by thought-provoking questions and encouraged to question and discuss ideas in order to develop a fuller understanding of the subject material. A student's attitude toward learning is influenced by the family and social background that he or she comes from. A good teacher will try to understand these backgrounds and, with them in mind, develop approaches to teaching that aim to eliminate negative attitudes and enhance their desire to learn. Ideal teachers should be firm, yet caring; flexible, yet steadfast in pursuing their ultimate goals; patient, yet persevering; strong in character and integrity, and demand excellence both from themselves and their students.

I will always remember Mrs. Pająk: a teacher whose unswerving commitment to teach young people and love for teaching has left a legacy of students whose capacity to think flourished and enjoyment of learning increased because of the deep impressions left by a dedicated educator.

Animal testing
History of medical researches begins hundreds years ago when people often called wizards were preparing mixtures to heal people. In that times nobody was criticising ways of developing drugs. Nowadays, there are millions of cosmetics, chemistry and medicine products around us. What is more, methods of testing them developed. We can check them by chemistry but to some products animals are the only way to test them.
It is fashionable to criticise modern drugs and the ways that we develop them, but we should never forget that there have been millions of lives saved by them. Testing animals was the only chance to make many vaccines. In the same way was about insulin. There are some people, who believe that insulin wasn't purified for use by testing animals. BULLSHIT! I have many proves that it is a lie. Insulin - the live saving drug for diabetics was discovered by tests on ones doctors dog!
Animal testing is required to make sure that drugs are safe before being tried on humans. I can't imagine introducing a new medicine without checking its effects on animals. Ofcourse there accidents where results of animal testing were different to human. It is not the point to stop researches. It is only one drop of milk in the ocean of coffee.
In some areas of researches humans are the only alternatives to animals. Researches would have stopped without animal testing. Nobody would like to be a tester of some new drug - it is just too dangerous. On the other hand we have to develop them - so the only thing we have are animals. It is also worth mentioned that there is a minimum of suffering in experiments, and this is because they are cared out carefully. Moreover about, all of these animals were specially bred for researches. They live to serve humans.
My opinion is that toady's world would have gone without this "different help of animals". Maybe some of researches are unnecessary. We should reduce them. Nevertheless I deeply believe that at least half of us wouldn't exist now on this planet without animal testing.
